Student Reflections

Been there, done that.....
now what are they saying about it?

  • "I didn't know if I would be physically strong enough to complete this trip, but I learned that I am both physically and mentally stronger than I knew. It also felt good to be so capable, whether we were setting up our tent, filtering our own water, or hiking 12 miles with our own 35-pound backpack. It taught me that even things that seem impossible are possible if you try it and do it."
  • "This is better than the Brazilian Buns workout!"
  • "I absolutely loved every bit of it."
  • "All the swimming that we did in lakes, rivers, creeks is one of my favorite memories. I will never forget swimming across that part of Lake Jocassee, climbing up those rocks to see the amazing waterfall behind them, and then jumping off of the cliff back into the lake."
  • "The most memorable positive moment has to be when we went to the waterfall and jumped off the ledge. I really enjoyed jumping and the most amazing time on this trip."
  • "I had such a great time and it was fun getting to know everyone that I wouldn't have otherwise. The whole experience was great and I will never forget it. Thank you!"
  • "I thought that the area was amazing and the trails were beautiful."
  • "The trail was good - anyone in moderate shape could complete it. It wasn't too hard and wasn't too easy either. The scenery was nice and the places to swim were great."
  • "I would definitely go on another backpacking trip. Overall, I had an amazing time. It's a great challenge and good way to get into shape."
  • "I loved that there was so much water for us to go swimming in at the campsites, and the entire time the trail was beautiful."
  • "The choice of area/trail was splendid with the enchanted forests."
  • "The steep uphill portions really tested my mental strength, and I was really proud when I pushed through to the top and kept going instead of taking the break for which my body begged me. It was really great to see everyone overcome their own challenges and support each other through it all."
  • "I learned that I can do a lot of things that I had no idea I could. I learned that my tolerance for cold water is higher than I ever thought. I learned that everyone has limits, but in the end no matter how slow/fast you go, we all get to the end feeling the same sense of accomplishment."
  • "I learned that I have more strength to just keep chugging than I ever thought I did. It is this kind of perseverance that I will remember when situations get difficult; I know I can tap into this inner power to pull through and finish!"
  • "I learned that I had a lot of leg strength but most importantly I learned that my mental strength is far superior."
  • "I loved the feeling of accomplishment at the end."
  • "I also loved experiencing the wilderness in general while getting to know people who I have not talked to before. I enjoyed how well our group bonded and everyone  was accepting of everyone else."
  • "I enjoyed learning the ability to live off the things that I carry on my back."
  • "The two best things were the scenery and the camaraderie - two things I would want to experience again in a heartbeat."
  • "I learned that if I really put my mind to it, I can overcome a challenge. I also learned that I can be determined and have willpower, which I usually lack."
